Roughly 50 automobiles have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they reported in a statement.
Law enforcement report they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.
The substance had been placed in the form of a swastika, they stated.
Officers then found many other smeared cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the public display of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement state early analysis indicate the fluid was probably human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no indication as to its origin; officials are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in association with the event," they stated.
Municipal representatives stated they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have requested to the residents for details.
A high-ranking representative stated the attack made him without words and needed to be resolved quickly.
"This incident hits the core of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist terrorist attack in 2020," he stated on online, recalling the death of nine people by a assailant targeting residents of foreign heritage in five years prior.
