Both Deceased Students Revealed in the Providence Campus Incident as Authorities Press On With Hunt for Gunman.

Two students who died in Saturday’s tragic incident at Brown University were honored at the start of the week – amid a widespread hunt for their shooter continued following the release by local law enforcement of the only individual of interest in the case.

Remembering Ella Cook

The student Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was remembered as “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, per the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which honored her memory at a service on Sunday.

Cook was second-in-command of Brown’s chapter of the campus GOP group, according to the organization. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also shared condolences on social media, saying in part: “There are no words. Thinking of her loved ones and companions, above all her mom and dad.”

An International Student

The second fatality was an Uzbek national named MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, from Uzbekistan in his initial year at the Ivy League university, his family confirmed.

Umurzokov’s identity was verified by Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.

“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. He harbored grand aspirations of pursuing a career in neurosurgery and helping people,” his sibling Samira said in a memorial statement.

What Happened

Nine more persons were injured in the violent event in the engineering building of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the university's examination week.

Law enforcement reported on Sunday evening that a man aged 24 taken into custody in a search at a lodging about around 27 kilometers from the campus earlier in the day was set to be freed.

“We have a murderer out there,” declared Peter Neronha, Peter Neronha.

He continued, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you need to change course and pursue a different angle, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last 24 hours or so.”

Public Fear

Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, admitted: “It is expected to provoke new worry for our community”.

The gunman discharged a weapon inside a classroom in the engineering facility on Saturday afternoon, firing more than 40 rounds from a 9mm handgun, a law enforcement official informed the news agency.

Law enforcement that raided the hotel found two handguns and magazines when the suspect was detained, the news agency reported.

The Wounded Victims

Among those wounded, a single scholar was discharged from care, said Brown’s president, Christina Paxson. Seven more were in critical but stable condition, and one remained in critical care, authorities stated on Sunday.

A private school, a private academy in the city of Durham, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was in the group of seriously hurt victims.

Additional Memorials

Tributes were paid to Cook at a memorial in Birmingham on Sunday. A pastor commented, “She shone as a remarkable, stable, devout beacon not only during her upbringing... but at Brown she was a shining example in that specific location as well.”

A group leader, Martin Bertao, posted a statement from the club. “Ella was known for her courageous, valiant, and compassionate nature as she served her chapter and other students,” he said.

An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by Umurzokov’s death in a tribute. “We extend our sincere condolences to the Umurzokov family, companions, and schoolmates and grieve for of his potential.”

Wider Picture

Saturday’s killings at Brown, the seventh oldest in the US university with about over seven thousand undergraduate and 3,000 graduate students, happened during one of at least 392 shooting incidents documented across the United States so far in the current year, according to records. That Monday marked the 349th day of the year.
