Our team is checking video footage and photographs posted earlier today that show the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he succumbed of his injuries. A probe is under way.
Our starting point to verify the site of where the pictures were from was based on posts indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building seen in the footage.
Identifying additional buildings, streetlights and the road configuration verified where the pictures were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
