Senegal's Emerging Star Lamine Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.

When I enter the room, the young midfielder grabs a football he clings to until after our chat. It’s a powerful symbol for a ambition he has always held onto. “I only wanted the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,” remarks the AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His resolve and natural ability won over clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the most difficult approval to secure didn't come from a sporting director or coach, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me playing soccer simply because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.

Surmounting Initial Obstacles

Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to chase his path in the game. Another challenge was his small stature, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a contract.

However, the famed academy – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After he earned the best player in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “astonished” to learn he was without a contract. They moved fast. “They took me straight to the training centre. They didn’t want me from going back to Casamance,” Camara said.

An Unforgettable Season and European Breakthrough

This move set him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, though tired, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his country to victory and earning best player.

A month later, he signed for Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” states the youngster. He has lived alone in Europe, a situation his relatives support to keep him focused.

Influences and Playing Style

Off-field noise aren't a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and superb skills. Additionally, he's a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and precision from set pieces are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to control his competitive fire, after being shown red early in his spells at each French club. “It is a habit that is following me!” he jokes.

Monaco, Mentors and Future Goals

At Monaco, he values learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” he said.

Currently, attention is squarely on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. If you beat England on their soil…,” he says, referencing a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.

On a potential future move to the English top flight, he is committed to Monaco at present. “I feel really comfortable here,” he insists. He is often teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about targeting the senior top prize down the line.

“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country… it gives you confidence.”

Looking ahead, this talented midfielder combines humble beginnings, steely determination, and grand ambitions targeting to lead Senegal to continental glory and forge his own lasting legacy in the game.
