The beloved crime series Line of Duty will make a comeback for its 7th season, announced by the BBC.

A brand new six-episode series created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the production team.

The actress expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together next year."

The previous series concluded in recent years with a finale that attracted over 17 million viewers. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but official word only arrived this week.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, according to production details.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue working to tackle misconduct within the police force.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."

New Character and Complex Case

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.

Yet, his case could be a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still operating in the shadows, plot details suggested.

In a statement, the creator said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had so many followers watch the developments of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh installment."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor described being part of the series as "the role of a career".

"Not only the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm so excited the show is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the unit return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together soon."

"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."

Show History

Line of Duty premiered in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.

The BBC haven't revealed exactly the new season will hit screens.

The finale of series six drew the extended plot about the search for kingpin known as "H" to a conclusion, and producers indicated at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

However, the network confirmed on this week that a seventh series is now being produced.
