The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Song
This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure by Critical Role, unveiled a new opening credits. It features the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at multiple agonizing backstories for key figures such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.
All in all, the opening looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the song choice.
The intro uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition created by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece from the soundtrack album of that title, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.
But for me, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when cast member the performer added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. This track that excites you before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.
The show's intro with "the new song" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its mood is a little off.
Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the animated show will have a few surprises and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening appears as one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be released on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the personas of the second series, the original episodes are available on Spotify and the video site.
