The Reason Real Madrid Possess 'Total Faith' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch

Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for Real Madrid, featuring five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a 18-year-old makes Real Madrid history in a crucial European tie against City, it inevitably draws acclaim and the spotlight.

During his first start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the club - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the fifteen-time Champions League winners secured a 3-0 last-16 first-leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English champions in the midweek return to secure a quarter-final berth.

Aged 18 years old, the midfielder became the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing Brazil forward Vini Jr's record by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent Through The Academy

The midfielder is the latest to come through from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising young players.

He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a positive impact.

He progressed to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who took over from Xabi Alonso in January.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting Pitarch excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, personality and determination he added to the side.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'

In the summer of 2025, former boss Alonso invited the youngster to practice with the first team and gave him playing time in the warm-up matches.

However, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against Benfica that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I started playing football, each day you head to training and every day you play a match," stated Pitarch following his debut.

"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the best team in the planet and in the top tournament."

Handed a first start in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for four years after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opportunity.

The teenager has taken it with displays that have defied his youth and inexperience.

"He is a extremely fast player, and you can observe his capabilities," said the coach. "He is extremely energetic, with excellent endurance, work-rate and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his coach.

"His standout trait is his character," continued he. "He constantly demands the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I realize people are surprised to see him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete confidence in him to do what he usually does.

"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in Spanish football, moving through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's renowned youth academy.

He possesses dual Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, offering him the option to play for both nations at senior international level.

According to international regulations, footballers may appear for multiple nations at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only binding once they appear in a competitive full international.

He has played for Spain at underage levels, representing both the U19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain reached the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to either full national side, who are monitoring his rise with interest.

In a recent interview, Pitarch said: "I haven't made my final decision yet. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a decision soon."

His situation echoes that of other dual nationality players such as club colleague Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal chose La Roja, Brahim opted to represent the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, his attention is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.

He played over an hour in the two-one victory at City, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a last-eight matchup with the German champions.

His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in younger players to help the club pursue trophies to come.

After his notable contributions so far on the Champions League, Pitarch is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"The manager handles me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I have to deserve my minutes on the pitch," he said following the success at Manchester.
